Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How does it work?

Well, we install a wireless device (a digital radio) at your home or business, and a firewall router.  These communicate directly to your PC or multiple PCs.  The radio allows you to communicate with the wireless Your Neighborhood Net network with your communication being encrypted.  Your communication speed will be at 1Mbps.  Through the wireless network you can access the Internet, communicate to other neighbors with full video and audio, chat, and more.  Simple as that.

  2. How fast will my access be or my speed be?

Currently the access will be 1Mbps (1 Mega bits per second), 1 million bits per second, and later 2 Mbps, and eventually 10Mbps without any additional equipment.

  3. What is involved in installation?

    Installation involves:

    1. Scheduling an install date and time.
    2. We pre-configure the equipment.
    3. We internally Setup Your Account to allow access, and billing, and support.
    4. We install a radio, firewall router, and if needed external antenna and pole, and cables to connect things.

No software is involved in your installation, and you do not need any additional software of any kind.

  4. Do I need to have anything already?

Yes and No.  Yes, we need you to have Ethernet connection ability to your computer.  However, if you do not have an Ethernet connection, we will install an Ethernet card into your computer, and this will cost you about $15 additional.  Almost everyone has a Ethernet connection in their PC already, and if you don't it is not a problem.

You can use any kind of computer with any kind of operating system.  Our service works with all computers and operating systems, and no additional software is needed by you.

  5. Will I get Email, and web site space or disk space on the Internet?

Yes, 10 email boxes, 10 email aliases (20 email addresses), 40 MB (Mega Bytes) of web space (disk space).  Spam filtering is done for free.

  6. Can we use Your Neighborhood Net services for a business?

Yes you can.  However, you may not run a business or commercial servers of any kind through the Your Neighborhood Net network.

  7. Will I have the problems that I get with satellite during bad weather?

No.  This is not satellite technology.  This is a local wireless network exclusive to your neighborhood.  First of all, the current neighbors have not reported any problems at all during bad weather of any kind.  Most likely, you will be using the Your Neighborhood Net to access the Internet, and for that you won't even notice a fraction of a second interruption.  In actuality, this question does not even apply because you are using it to get data, and there is technology and buffering involved by your PC that makes this irrelevant.

  8. Does this replace my Cable TV service.

No.  This is not Cable TV, nor is it provision of TV or movie channels.

  9. Who will provide support.

Support, and all communication will be provided by AstraGate, Inc.  AstraGate is a full national ISP, and providing services since 1998.
